We are an Eco-School!

We are very excited to share that we have been awarded the Eco-Schools’ Green Flag Award thanks to the hard work of our eco club last academic year.

We received lots of praise for their commitment to helping the environment from the assessor including the following:

  • It’s fantastic that you have such a large Eco-Club in your school, it shows that your pupils clearly care about our planet and all plants, animals, and insects that live on it;
  • Members of your Eco-Club took ownership over completing the Eco-Schools’ Environmental Review, guided by their interest, passion, and determination. It was a pleasure to read that your Eco-Club was inspired by our Environmental Review and gathered lots of ideas for their Action Plan when they completed it;
  • Monitoring and Evaluation can be one of the more difficult steps of the Eco-Schools’ framework, your Eco-Club predicted this and proactively developed ways to monitor their projects from an early stage;
  • We praise your Eco-Club for their wonderful efforts to keep their school updated about their Eco-Schools’ work. Delivering an assembly about their work will have taken a lot of courage, so especially well done for doing so!

What is an Eco-School and Green Flag Award?

The Eco-Schools programme provides a simple, seven-step framework that empowers young people to make a difference in their school, local community and beyond. Since 1994, millions of young people around the world have worked through the Eco-Schools Seven Steps before being recognised for their efforts with a prestigious Eco-Schools Green Flag.

Schools connect their activities to three or more of the Ten Eco-Schools Topics. These topics break large, global issues like climate change into more manageable and directed themes that prompt young people to consider environmental changes that they can make in their school and everyday lives.

This year, we will once again hold fortnightly eco-club meetings. We have twelve new members from Years 1-6. We will be updating this page and our school newsletter to tell you all about the fantastic ideas and projects that the children complete.

April Update

This month, we have focused on recycling. Eco club decided that the pupils at our school needed a reminder about which bins should be used for recycling and which bins should be used for general waste. They put together an informative powerpoint and shared this in one of our assemblies. They explained the use of the fruit bin, paper bin and other general recycling bins.

Eco club presented this excellently! Well done Eco club.

May update

This month, Eco Club launched our Greenpeace ‘Posters for the Planet’ initiative. They did this by delivering an assembly to ask pupils to design a poster to encourage our local MP to help protect our planet. We then sent these to our local MP and are looking forward to his response.

Here are a few of the wonderful posters that the children created.

June Update

For the rest of the school year, we are going to be looking at different ways to save water both in school and outside of school, especially now it is getting hotter.

Here are some top tips for saving water:

  • Continue to drink water to keep hydrated but only pour as much as you plan on drinking,
  • Think about the length of your shower - could you shower in a few minutes?
  • Collect rainwater to water your plants,
  • Don't pour water onto the ground as every drop counts,
  • Turn off the tap while you are brushing your teeth,
  • Only fill up paddling pools with as much water as you need - you could use this water to water the plants or grass when you are finished.

We welcome any further suggestions on how we can be saving water in school.
